Pok¨Śmon Crown Tundra: Calyrex adventure - Spectrier, Glastrier, where to plant and how to choose Iceroot or Shaderoot Carrots
A full walkthrough for the first adventure in the Crown Tundra expansion.
Calyrex, fancifully known as The King of Bountiful Harvests, is the main Legendary Pokémon in the Crown Tundra DLC, and his story makes up the bulk of the main questline here, too, in the adventure called The Sacred Bonds of Sovereign and Steed.
Below you'll find a step-by-step guide to each stage of the quest, including deatils on which carrot to choose, and how to catch Calyrex himself.

The Sacred Bonds of Sovereign and Steed: the first part of the Calyrex adventure from The King of Bountiful Harvests clue
On arrival in Freezington, the Mayor will tell you about something called The King of Bountiful Harvests. It sounds like an old legend, but then so are all the best Pokémon stories. He'll also let you know you can take your Pokémon out of its ball and let it follow you in the world here too, which is neat. Finally, you'll learn that the town's resident statue of the legendary Pokémon is missing its head, which is a shame. Keep an eye out for that!
Head into the house with the flags outside, and Peony will make you Expedition Chief - basically, you go do the work while he chills out in the warm at home. He also gives you Legendary Clue 1, 2 and 3 - three scraps of paper with some clues to three separate stories on them. The first refers to Calyrex, The King of Bountiful Harvests, and is the one we tackle here, although you can actually do these in any order. He'll also give you a Master Ball - worth saving!
First things first, grab what is very obviously the missing statue's head sitting on Peony's table - just interact with it and ask if you can keep it when prompted. You can also heal up and change outfits in the bedroom, and then it's time to go explore!
Pop the Wooden Crown onto the statue outside, and the Pokémon, Calyrex itself, will appear just behind it! Follow it into the bushes nearby, and it'll battle you. You can't catch it but it's easy enough to beat.

Afterwards, some hilarity will ensue, and eventually you'll find that Calyrex can actually talk to you, which is neat! It wants to restore its former power and revive the barren lands around Freezington to help the town thrive again, but unfortunately it's now pretty weak and needs some help. Your first task: go and talk to everyone in town and ask them about it. It's pretty self-explanatory: talk to every NPC in the village, including the Mayor, then return to Calyrex when prompted.
That out the way, you'll then be told to talk to the Mayor again, as Calyrex needs to get his trusty steed back you need to find out some info first. Go up to the Mayor's house and you'll be told he's actually off in Giant's Bed. Specifically, you need to go down the hill through Frostpoint Field, keep going to the left in Giant's Bed, and you'll find some crumbling walls and a vegetable patch, where the Mayor's waiting. Talk to him then head back to town.
Back at Freezington, go to the Mayor's house and talk to him, then read the bookshelf. You specifically need to read the book about the Harvest, but it's worth skimming them all for some fun lore. You'll learn about two kinds of special carrot: Iceroot Carrots and Shaderoot Carrots. Return to Calyrex and answer "carrots" when prompted.
It turns out, Iceroot Carrots will attrack an Ice-type steed for Calyrex, called Glastrier, while the Shaderoot Carrots will attract the Ghost-type, called Spectrier. You can get special Carrot Seeds from the man in the middle of town by the vegetable patches - talk to him, and he'll want 8x Dynite Ore in exchange. You get this for completing Dynamax Adventures! One fully successful run will be enough, or a couple of not quite complete ones will do. Buy the seeds off him when you can, and then it's time to choose.
Spectrier, Glastrier, which carrot to choose out of Iceroot or Shaderoot carrots explained
Your choice of carrot will determine the type of mount that Calyrex will ride, and in turn what type Calyrex himself is when you finally get to catch him. Basically, Calyrex is a very unusual Pokémon: the base Calyrex that you're talking to in town is Grass and Psychic-type and has OK stats. But once it has its steed - and some other conditions are met, more on those further below - it fuses with it to become either Ice Rider or Shadow Rider form, gaining altered typing, moves, Ability, and stats. Here are the outcomes in the simplest terms:
- Iceroot Carrot - Glastrier, and combined form Calyrex is Psychic and Ice-type. Low Speed and Special Attack, very high physical Attack, HP, and Defense stats. Ability is both Unnerve and Chilling Neigh, which boosts Attack stat when you KO an opponent. A great Trick Room Pokémon, if you're thinking competitively.
- Shaderoot Carrot - Spectrier, and combined form Calyrex is Psychic and Ghost-type. Ability is both Unnerve and Grim Neigh, which boosts Special Attack stat when you KO an opponent. Very high Speed and Special attack, lower defensive stats. An amazing glass cannont sweeper, in competitive terms.
Both are great, in their own way, but you can only choose one, so choose wisely!
Where to plant the Carrot Seeds explained
Once you've decided, you'll need to plant the seeds in a specific patch to get the carrot you want.
For the Iceroot Carrot, plant the seed in the patch at the top of the first hill on Snowslide Slope, which is found by heading through Giant's Bed and hanging far left until it gets snowy.
For the Shaderood Carrot, plant the seed in the patch in Old Cemetary, which is found by heading through the lower, central part of Giant's Bed until you see the tombstones, and you'll find the patch there.

How to beat and catch Calyrex
Now you've got the carrot you want, you're almost there - but first, Glastrier or Spectrier will be on a bit of a rampage. Head back to Freezington and it'll arrive in the middle of town. Battle it! Again, you can't catch it yet, so just focus on defeating it for now.

You'll pick up a tuft of White Mane Hair or Black Mane Hair, depending on the steed, after you win, which are half of what you need to make the Reins of Unity - the item Calyrex needs to properly fuse with the steed. Go speak to Calyrex yet again!
He'll give you a Radiant Petal, which should hopefully be enough to be the second part of what you need for the Reins. Now it's time to try and make them - head to the Mayor's house and speak with him.
The Mayor struggles, although good on him for trying, as he's never done it before - but turns out Peony, of all people, is quite the pro! He whips up a set of Reins of Unity in no time, and you're golden. Now, it's time to head to the Crown Shrine.
How to beat and catch Calyrex
Head back to Snowslide Slope again, and this time go all the way to the top. Head through the Tunnel To The Top, which is a somewhat twisty-turny cave with some great Pokémon and items to find, and then out the other side, to the Crown Shrine itself. If you're struggling, aim to go up as high as possible, there'll be a snowy, indoor platform along the way which is a sign you're going in the right direction.
Approach Calyrex and his peon, Peony, and talk to them. Then go to the bowl on the left when prompted and place the carrot, then wait... and it's time to battle!
Save your game first just in case, although if you knock Calyrex out or lose to it, it'll stay there waiting for you, which makes your life easier. Then, time to take it down! It can be a tough fight if you're not prepared. Have a good 'catcher' Pokémon with you if you can, that has high attack, a move like False Swipe, and a move that can either cause paralysis or sleep for your opponent. Also, it's better to heal your Pokémon than to let it knock any of them out - once Calyrex starts knocking out Pokémon, its ability will activate and its Attack or Special Attack will start to raise, making it much harder to deal with.

Bring plenty of bulky Pokémon, resistant to Ice or Ghost-type attacks in particular, lots of Potions and lots of Poké Balls, and be patient. Calyrex has a very low catch rate, but you'll get there eventually!
Once it's caught, head back to town for a chat with Peony in Freezington, and you're all done. That's Adventure 1: The Sacred Bond of Sovreign and Steed all done!
