Pok¨¦mon Go Giratina counters, weaknesses and moveset explained
Giratina emerges from the Distorted World.
Giratina has emerged from the Distorted World to make an appearance in Pokémon Go.
When the Renegade Pokémon does make an appearance in Pokémon Go it will take one of two formes, either the wyvern Origin Forme or the winged Altered Forme. Thankfully, Giratina’s weaknesses and counters remain the same no matter which forme it takes.
Like other Legendary Pokémon, Giratina will be available in five-star Raids, so, if you want to defeat this dragon, you’ll need a team of fellow trainers.

Giratina counters and weaknesses in Pokémon Go
If you want to add Giratina to your Pokédex, then you need a team that will strike at its weakness and the counters below will help you do this:
- Giratina type: Ghost and Dragon-type
- Giratina is weak against: Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost and Ice-type attacks
- Giratina is resistant to: Fighting, Normal, Bug, Electric, Fire, Grass, Poison and Water-type attacks
- Giratina Mega counters: Mega Rayquaza is, as always, leagues ahead of everything else. It is followed by Mega Tyranitar, Mega Garchomp and Mega Salamence.
- Giratina non-Mega counters: Shadow Tyranitar takes the lead as the top stop as the best non-Mega Counter, thanks to Brutal Swing. This is somehow better than Dialga Origin, the next-best counter. Shadow Garchomp, Palkia Origin, Primal Groudon, Shadow Salamence and Shadow Dragonite follow.
- Number of players to beat Giratina: You’re looking at three to six Trainers with fully optimal Level 40 counters at the bare minimum. Aim for 7–11 and you should be fine.
- Tactics: We recommend focusing on powerful dragon-types when building your Giratina counters team, because, while Giratina’s dual typing does mean it has an advantage over them, this weaknesses works both ways. If you’re struggling against a Giratina with Dragon-type attacks, change your line-up to include your strongest Dark-type Pokémon instead.

Giratina Moveset in Pokémon Go
Both the Fast and Charged moves that each Giratina Forme uses are different, though the majority of the moves are either Dragon or Ghost-type.
When it comes to the best moveset for Altered Forme Giratina, we recommend Shadow Claw (Fast) and Dragon Claw (Charged). These moves ensure you’re utilising both of Giratina’s types and, if you’re able to unlock its second Charged attack, we recommend choosing Shadow Sneak for extra ghostly power.
Here are the moves that Altered Forme Giratina can use:
Possible Fast Moves:
- Dragon Breath (Dragon)
- Shadow Claw (Ghost)
Possible Charged Moves:
- Ancient Power (Ground)
- Dragon Claw (Dragon)
- Shadow Sneak (Ghost)
Possible Legacy Charged Moves:
- Shadow Force (Ghost)
For Origin Forme Giratina’s moveset, we recommend Shadow Claw (Fast) and Shadow Ball (Charged). Just like the moveset for Altered Forme Giratina, these attacks ensure you’re utilising both of Giratina’s types and, if you’ve gathered enough candy, we suggest Dragon Pulse for this Pokémon’s second charged attack.
Below you’ll find the moves that Origin Forme Giratina can learn:
Possible Fast Moves:
- Dragon Tail (Dragon)
- Shadow Claw (Ghost)
Possible Charged Moves:
- Dragon Pulse (Dragon)
- Ominous Wind (Ghost)
- Shadow Ball (Ghost)
Possible Legacy Charged Moves:
- Shadow Force (Ghost)

Everything we know about Giratina
Created by Arceus (i.e Pokémon god), Giratina is part of the creation trio, alongside Dialga and Palkia.
Giratina was a lot more violent than Arceus expected, so it was banished to the Distortion World. Yes, this does effectively make it Poké-Satan.
Giratina is the personification (or Pokémonification if you will) of antimatter, with the Distortion World acting as a near opposite to the normal Poké-verse. It’s an area devoid of time and space, with the laws of physics being absent.
Giratina has two different formes: Altered Forme Giratina has six legs and a pair of wings, while Origin Forme has a serpent like appearance, with six floating appendages. However, they share an official Pokédex entry, which you can read below.
Giratina: 'This Pokémon is said to live in a world on the reverse side of ours, where common knowledge is distorted and strange.'
In the main series of games, you can only find the Origin Forme Giratina when you visit the Distortion World or when Giratina is holding the Griseous Orb. The two formes have different stats; Altered Forme Giratina is defense-oriented, while Origin Forme prefers to be offensive.
Good luck catching Giratina in Pokémon Go!
