Packed with a daunting damage output and low time to kill, the CR-56 AMAX is a well known assault rifle in Warzone - and requires to complete a specific challenge to unlock.
The weapon has gone through several nerfs by developer Raven throughout Season 3, and these didn't stop there, as it was back on target with the launch of Season 4 as well. Yet, this weapon is still the top choice for many, at least for the time being.

How to unlock the AMAX in Warzone
The CR-56 AMAX can be acquired by purchasing shop blueprints or through an in-game challenge that will sound rather straightforward if you're used to this weapon category.
To unlock the AMAX in Warzone, you must get 3 Gunbutt kills while using an Assault Rifle in 10 different matches.
In case you're unaware of the term, Gunbutt refers to the melee attack when you're carrying a weapon, as opposed to melee with a knife or your fists. You'll have to kill three enemies across ten different matches with this method.
Alas, there is no possibility to progress through this challenge in Cold War, so Nuketown 24/7 is out of the question. We recommend you focus on Warzone's Plunder mode first and foremost. It will save you tonnes of time compared to battle royale, as you can revive throughout the match.
Once you've completed the challenge, the game will let you know of your new weapon in the rewards page after the match. From there, just head to the loadout tab and equip the weapon in the secondary slot.
Best Warzone AMAX loadout and attachments
Below are our recommendations for an optimal AMAX loadout:
- Muzzle: Monolithic Suppressor (Unlocks at level 66)
- Barrel: XRK Zodiac S440 (Unlocks at level 44)
- Optic: VLK 3.0x Optic (Unlocks at level 26)
- Underbarrel: Commando Foregrip (Unlocks at level 6)
- Ammunition: 45 Round Mags (Unlocks at level 31)
The Monolithic Suppressor is the best current choice for the muzzle category. Along with sound suppression, it increases the damage range of the assault rifle quite a bit. Aim down sight speed and aim walking steadiness are affected in return, but not by a big margin.
Onto the barrel. If you were wondering about bullet velocity and recoil control, don't fret, as the XRK Zodiac S440 will increase both of them, as well as the damage range further. Movement and ADS speed are affected, but it's worth it.
Instead of a laser, the CR-56 AMAX really benefits from an optic. In particular we've found the VLK 3.0x Optic to be the best option, granting zoom level with the caveat of decreasing ADS time slightly. When you consider the increase to damage range of the build, however, an optic is a must.
Next, the underbarrel. We've opted for the Commando Foregrip, which boosts both recoil and aim stability. Movement speed is slightly decreased as a result, but other than that, this is the best underbarrel.
Lastly, ammunition. This is key since the magazine will be somewhat limited from the get-go, for which the 45 Rounds Mags can help greatly. It comes with the cost of reducing ADS time and movement speed, but this won't be a big worry.

Best Warzone AMAX class setup, perks and equipment
Here's our choices for the best items - such as equipment and Perks - to make the best AMAX class setup in Warzone:
- Perk 1: Quick Fix (Unlocks at level 42)
- Perk 2: Overkill (Unlocks at level 38)
- Perk 3: Amped (Unlocks at level 1)
- Primary: Swiss K31 (Unlocks at level 31 of the Battle Pass)
- Tactical: Heartbeat Sensor (Unlocks at level 30)
- Lethal: Proximity Mine (Unlocks at level 43)
The CR-56 AMAX won't take long to start taking down enemies, so beginning health regeneration immediately after each battle with Quick Fix makes for a great combo. In case level 42 seems a bit steep, E.O.D. will help to mitigate damage from non-killstreak explosives and fire until then.
As per usual we recommend opting for Overkill as the second perk. As for our weapon of choice, the Swiss K31 is the perfect pair. This sniper rifle is fast and can deal damage at great distances in just a few seconds.
If a target manages to sneak past your sniper, don't fret, as Amped will increase the speed of the action.
Moving onto equipment, we opted to use the Heartbeat Sensor ourselves. This will compliment the role of both weapons - enemies that are far away an be taken down with the Swiss K31, while the CR-56 AMAX can take care of any stray targets that dare to approach you.
Lastly, we continue to be fond of the Proximity Mine; it's quick to deploy and will always cover your back, especially if you place it at the side of entrances or stairs. Lastly, it also serves as a good alarm for upcoming enemies, in case you don't get to double check the Heartbeat Sensor on time.
