Games of 2014: Alien: Isolation
You're Newt going to believe this.
It's been a long time since I played a horror game where I needed someone else present in the room just to give me a little bit of reassurance. I couldn't play Silent Hill 2 on my own, couldn't play the early Resident Evils, and certainly couldn't play Slender: The Eight Pages without another unfortunate soul beside me, sharing my misery.
Then, this year, two titles made me force my flatmates into staying on the sofa, lights off, for long stretches. The first was P.T, the free demo that turned out to be a taster for Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro's Silent Hills. It won't be on many Game of the Year lists, though perhaps it deserves to be. The second was Alien: Isolation, a game that defied expectations and turned out to be something really quite original. Here's my take on it, in video form.
