Shinra Technologies is Square Enix's cloud gaming company
Aeris would be proud.
Square Enix has set up a cloud gaming company called Shinra Technologies.
Cloud was the star of Final Fantasy 7, and The Shinra Electric Power Company was the game's evil mega corp. Do you see what they did there?
Shinra Technologies has its headquarters in New York City and is run by Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada. It will begin beta testing its cloud services in early 2015.
At the Tokyo Game Show today Square Enix demoed the tech, and revealed a partnership with Ubisoft for its games. The idea is a virtual supercomputer will power game-streaming over the cloud, with all games streamed as video, so no particular hardware is required to play. Shinra said it has "world-class" infrastructure and network providers in place to ensure high quality video and minimal latency.
From the official Shinra website: "Shinra Technologies, Inc. is the next evolution of gaming. Harnessing the power of a supercomputer in the cloud, Shinra creates a groundbreaking experience not possible with today's current gaming technology. Shinra is not just what's next. Shinra is the technological breakthrough that will propel the industry forward.
"Shinra intends to closely collaborate with cutting-edge game studios to develop new, never-before-seen game experiences, and will become the hub of a high-end cloud community for gamers."
