How to get Remote Raid Passes in Pokémon Go

As part of the Remote Raid Pass changes implemented on Thursday 6th April 2023 in Pokémon Go, a new method for earned Remote Raid Passes was introduced.

Remote Raid Passes are now part of the Research Breakthrough reward pool. This means that every time you earn a Research Breakthrough by completing at least one field research task on seven different days, there's a chance you'll receive as Remote Raid Pass as one of your rewards.

It's important to note that the Remote Raid Passes you can potentially earn through this method are still subject to the three-Remote-Raid-Pass per player limit in your inventory. So, if you already have three Remote Raid Passes in your inventory but earn another from a Research Breakthrough, you'll receive a Premium Battle Pass instead.

You can still purchase Remote Raid Passes from the in-game store, but their price has been increased as part of the Remote Raid Pass changes added in April 2023. If you'd like to learn them, look further down in this guide.

How to use a Remote Raid Pass in Pokémon Go

If you want to raid remotely in Pokémon Go, you must first purchase a Remote Raid Pass from the in-game store.

With pass in hand, you can join a raids remotely by either using the Nearby tab or by selecting a gym that contains a raid on the overworld map. Using the Nearby tab is both the easier and more effective option, because it will allow you to see a wider selection of raids.

You can also use apps like Poke Genie to join a raid remotely from anywhere across the world.

After you've selected which raid you wish to join, you'll find yourself looking at the familiar raid screen. The only difference, however, is that the regular button for joining a raid has been replaced with a pink one, which will allow you to join in exchange for a Remote Raid Pass.

If you do decide to join the raid, then selecting your team, battling the raid boss and enjoying your rewards (if you win that is...) will all occur just like how they would if you were raiding normally.

Up to five players can join a raid remotely and, if this limit is reached, any players that try to join remotely afterwards will be placed in a new lobby.

Limitations of Remote Raiding in Pokémon Go explained

Unlike regular raids in Pokémon Go, there are a number of limitations attached to Remote Raiding. These limitations were updated on Thursday 6th April 2023, so, if you regularly use Remote Raid Passes, make sure you're up-to-date with the changes.

Firstly, if you want to join a raid remote, then you will need a Remote Raid Pass. You can only carry three Remote Raid Passes at one time, so try to use them quickly.

Secondly, as of April 2023, you can only use five Remote Raid Passes per day with this limitation possibly increasing for special events. Outside of these events, however, once you've raided remotely five times in a day, you'll have to wait until the next rolls around before you can use another Remote Raid Pass.

The third limitation is that only five players can join a raid using a Remote Raid Pass. This decision is presumably to allow a degree of fairness between those who are still using the regular raiding system.

This doesn't mean, however, that you can't compete in this specific raid if the limitation has been reached. Instead, you'll simply be placed in a new lobby and will have to either invite or wait for more players to join you.

The fourth and final limimitation is that Remote Raid Pass player deal less damage when compared to players who join the raid from its physical location. For this reason, it's always a good idea to pick your Pokémon team carefully if you're planning on joining a raid remotely.

This limitation can, however, be negated by in-game events, such as when, during the Season of Rising Heroes, the amount of damage dealt by Pokémon battling remotely was increased.

How to purchase a Remote Raid Pass in Pokémon Go

The price for a Remote Raid Pass, including the bundle of three, changed on Thursday 6th April 2023.

These new prices are: 195 PokéCoins for one Remote Raid Pass and 525 PokéCoins for three Remote Raid Passes.

It's important to note that if you purchase three Remote Raid Passes when you already have two in your inventory, you'll be able to hold five Remote Raid Passes.

To purchase a Remote Raid Pass or the bundle, you need to visit the in-game store, which is accessible via the main menu in Pokémon Go. Once there, you'll find the Remote Raid Passes in the Items section where you can buy them using PokéCoin.

Remote Raids and Remote Raid Passes in Pokémon Go explained

Remote Raids allow you to use a Remote Raid Pass to join a raids in Pokémon Go from the comfort of your own home; no longer do you have to stand in the rain to catch that Legendary Pokémon or risk being attacked by birds.

On Thursday 6th April 2023, the Remote Raid Passes went through a number of changes, including a price increase, a new method for obtaining them and an additional limitation. Still, these changes and limitations aside, Remote Raiding functions exactly the same as raiding does when you're at the physcial location of the gym.

Viewing raids remotely also allows you to collect your free Raid Pass for that day, which is incredibly useful if you're down a pass, but don't have the time to collect it.

You also don't have to worry about losing out on either raid related field research tasks or the achievement medals, because Remote Raids will still be counted for these.

It's important to note that players using Remote Raid Passes will deal less damage to the Raid Boss than those joining the raid from the Gym's physical location. This means that, if you're planning on joining a raid remotely, you should take this damage reduction into account when choosing your Pokémon team.

This limitation, however, can be negated by in-game events. During the Season of Rising Heroes, for example, Pokémon being used in Remote Raids had the amount of damage they dealt increased.
