Naughty Dog initially divided over The Last of Us ending plans
Upcoming story DLC to feature returning characters.
The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog has said that team members were divided over the final game's choice of ending.
Minor spoilers follow
Speaking last night during a Reddit AMA, creative director Neil Druckmann revealed that Naughty Dog initially planned for a much happier ending than the game's final, uncomfortable scenes.
Originally, "Ellie and Joel were driving completely contented and satisfied with their adventures off into a glorious sunset," game director Bruce Straley revealed. "But that didn't feel right.
"It just wasn't honest to the world or the characters we created. This ending," he said, referring to the final version, "felt right for us... [Naughty Dog had] about three or four ideas before finding the ending that worked best for the story we wanted to tell."
Even so, not all in Naughty Dog agreed. It "didn't sit well with some members of the team," Druckmann said. "Once it was more fleshed out, it became an easier sell."
Intriguingly, we'll get to see some of the alternate ideas - Druckmann and Straley promised to show off some of their cut plans at PAX Prime later this month.
The duo also briefly mentioned The Last of Us' upcoming DLC: two multiplayer packs and one single-player expansion were promised as part of the game's Season pass.
Details of the first DLC drop will be made public later this month, they said. Whether this will be the single-player add-on or not is unknown, but Straley did confirm that the extra story content would include returning characters.
Guys, it's still not too late to work in that happy ending. Guys?
