Join us for Sony's PlayStation State of Play
Live from 10pm UK.
Two weeks after Microsoft's turn, it's now Sony's time in the spotlight. Tonight's big PlayStation State of Play broadcast is the first we've heard from Sony this year - and this evening looks set to lay out a line-up of blockbusters coming to PS5 over 2024 - and into 2025.
Join us as we watch and cover everything live from 10pm UK time (GMT) - the show is set to last 40 minutes, and feature 15 games.
What do we expect? Quite a lot, actually. Sony itself has said to expect "guest appearances from some of the most talented minds in gaming" - and without an invitation ourselves we can only assume this means Hideo Kojima. It's high time we heard more about Death Stranding 2. But who else might also qualify? Our money's on BioShock creator Ken Levine, whose long-awaited Judas is now finally nearing release.
Tune in later to find out - and as always, please do share your thoughts and reactions in the comments section, we'll feature the best in the livetext below.
Our live coverage of this event has finished.
Hey up, what's going on!
Let's see what you've all been saying...
Laserbrain says: I mean obviously Half Life Al for PSVR2 will be announced
I love the optimism! Let's will it into existence.
the_ewan says: - Vaguely realistic hope - some Sony first-party PSVR2 games, preferably Astrobot - Wild speculation - Killzone or Resistance, to be available in both flat and VR modes - Sign of the apocalypse - Bloodborne. Anything mention of it whatsoever.
Hah! So does that mean we should hope for a sign of the apocalypse or not? I'm confused!
CarbonGlacier says: I agree that it’d be nice to see a new Motorstorm. Maybe even just the first game with graphical improvements and some new tracks. A real PS3 highlight. Would love to see Al on PS VR2 but sceptical it’ll ever happen.
A new Motorstorm! Goodness me, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Inventive racing games were all the rage back then, eh?
I'm not sure how I feel about Death Stranding 2 being subtitled On the Beach, if it is. It sounds like a bad Netflix series!
...is there a good Netflix series? Don't, Bertie, don't.
OneAyedPirate says: A new Wipeout game would be nice. A man can dream right?
Oh don't! That would be delicious.
I'd happily take an Until Dawn remaster, by the way. I'd also like to see Stellar Dawn renamed Stella Dawn, to give Dawn more of a starring role. And, well, Judas never know what other surprises Sony has in store!
I worked hard on that.
Kami says: Judas, Jud-a-a-a-ahhhs...
Haha! *Presses X*
Budgie says: My one prediction is one of the 15 games being Suicide Squad as part of their marketing co spend and every throwing a fit about it showing up.
OK! We'll make a note of it and see if you can be the next Mystic Meg. I like your chances, personally!
Miyamotosan says: Just give us one complete surprise and I'll be happy.
Surprise!
Does that count?
spookelectric says: Granddad Bertie at it again
Haha. Welcome, welcome.
You've got to love the countdown to another countdown. But here we go. One minute and counting...
The show begins
And we're off.
Logos and... Helldivers. OK. Don't worry, there's plenty of time.
Here's PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst, wearing one of Jim Ryan's shirts by the look of things. He's reading from a telepromter.
Aha! This looks like Stellar Blade, which in turn looks quite Bayonetta-y to me. Lovely leather trousers, and oh gosh are they tight.
So we're hearing a bit about the game. You play Eve, who apparently sees the need to wear a tie with her armour. And she's got a pilot colleage called... Adam.
It looks smart, with a lot of attention clearly paid to shiny bottoms and bouncy, um, body physics.
People refer to Eve as a kind of angel. There are some huge environments. The combat looks super-acrobatic.
Ha! I love that she quite literally sits in a chair and chills for a bit to restore her health. What a brilliantly boldy mundane thing to put in your game.
So it's open-world, there's a skill tree to tailor your build with, and yeah, there will presumably be a lot of things for you to collect in the open-world, to justify it having an open-world.
But some of the character design looks good. I like that old cyborg man. Everyone is very pretty apart from him, and from the mutated enemies of course.
Rahmus says: AA games are alive
And I sort of love it?
perfect_organism says: Thought I had Frosties in for a pre bed time snack but it was just an empty box. I’m devastated.
Haha - I love this comment.
Stellar Blade is coming 26th April
Lovely over the top music to go with it.
26th April for Stellar Blade.
Now, here's a spiky blue hedgehog I've never seen before!
Miyamotosan says: Imagine if Sonic games played as good as the trailers looked.
Touché!
A look at Hoy's Zeneless Zone Zero there, which looked interesting.
I get a sense they're clearing the way for some bigger announcements here. I, um, hope.
We're seeing Foamstars, which is coming out 6th February as part of the PlaySation Plus line-up.
Dave the Diver is coming to PS5
I was about to say that looked like Dave the Diver, and it bloody is! Dave the Diver is coming to PS5 in April.
And it's got Godzilla in it!
Oh this is V Rising! I suppose it's coming to PS5 too. Was a big hit on PC, and it's had a lot of development there since.
perfect_organism says: Robert please do not laugh at my Frosties situation unless you are in possession of Frosties in the South West of the UK.
I apologise! I should not have made light of your cereal situation.
V Rising is just "coming 2024", which is a bit vague. But still: great game.
Hold up! Konami partnership. Silent Hill!
A new, free Silent Hill game stealth-drops
We're seeing a bespectacled woman exploring a very creepy apartment block of some kind, with her smartphone. There are photos all over the wall, and creepy characters in the hallways. Everything is messed up.
Silent Hill: The Short Message. Somewhat worryingly, the full game will be free to play. I wonder what that means. Is it a new PT?
Oh, it's available today, after this ends! A new kind of psychological horror! A stealth drop.
Great stuff!
We're now treated to a longer look at the Silent Hill 2 remake that's in development for PlayStation 5. Which looks OK?
A longer look at Ken Levine's new game Judas
They're coming thick and fast now. This is Ken Levine's new project Judas.
Are we going to see gameplay? Yes, some, in a montage. It looks surreal, and also obviously quite BioShocky. Weapons in one hand, powers in another. And it looks like we can fabricate our bodies? There's clearly something very strange going on in the game.
It looks great.
No release date, but it's obviously in development for PS5.
Metro VR game announced
Hey it's a PSVR2 game! They do exist. Someone page Ian!
Is this Metro VR? It looks a lot like it. It looks very atmospheric. And scary.
Metro: Awakening VR, it's called. And it's coming this year. Give us some dates you cowards!
Is that Elder Scrolls music behind this VR fantasy game?
It so is Elder Scrolls music! That's either copyright infringement or...
No, it's something called Legendary Tales. Coming 8th February. Looked a bit ropy.
Dragon's Dogma 2 now, and it's looking good. Lovely wizard hats! Some super enemy design there, all wraithy and floating.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is coming out 22nd March. Big fingers crossed energy for this one.
Now we're speeding on to Rise of the Ronin from Team Ninja.
A look at Rise of the Ronin
We're in 19th century Yokohama, speeding around town as a samurai, who just grapple-hooked up the side of a building, into the sky, then whipped out a paraglider shaped in the form of a bird. Then, when he had glided to the ground, he mounted a horse and rode off. Which was pretty gangster of him - pretty Yakuza of him. I guess the suggestion was that you can get around quickly.
It's giving off a slightly dated look, but the action is sprightly, as you would obviously expect from a Team Ninja game. Enemies are aggressive.
There's a big of gun use in, which itself follows the story of gunpowder being brought into Japan and challenging the old ways of combat and doing things. Have you all seen Blue-Eyed Samurai yet? If you haven't: do.
I think this one might struggle to stand out. 22nd March it's coming out.
Aha! This looks like Until Dawn! The remaster?
Remastered Until Dawn shown
I wonder what they've added to it...
Some sexy dolls? That was weird.
Rebuilt and enhanced for PS5 and PC. No other details beyond that. And coming this year.
Kojima Productions now and what must be Death Stranding 2.
We just saw a cat that had a huge, tentacled tongue. There's a nurse-like lady wearing a mask that's like two surgical gloves clasped over her mouth. That's weird. I like it.
Holy crackers, they are hands!
They were operating on a person's arm, pulling things out. This whole thing is crackers - no one quite does a trailer like Kojima.
We're seeing Sam again - Norman Reedus, by the looks of things - and he's being introduced to his new living quarters, which involves weapons as well. Will there be combat this time?
The lady with the extra hands around her neck now has a ventriloquist dummy on her shoulder. There's a suggestion you'll take it on your adventure.
Now we're seeing Sam with his familiar suit on, holding the baby again, and out in the wilderness, expanding the network again.
We're seeing some stunning visual effects - flooding water, crumbling mountains. But also some monstrosities - giant hand-like monsters.
Sam's got a kind of motorbike buggy thing, and he's also got a gun. And some orange-masked, Joker-faced character is back to get him, who sounds like he's voiced and acted by Troy Baker.
It's called Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
There's the little ventriloquist dummy again, dangling from Sam's belt.
The Troy Baker character carries an electric guitar weapon, that he shreds to fight enemies with. Crackers.
Reedus a bedtime story, Norm!
It IS called Death Stranding 2: On the Beach! God I love that lady with the extra hands.
It's coming out in 2025.
Kojima making a new action espionage game for Sony
And here's Hideo Kojima. Hermen Hulst is making an announcement about their partnership. It's something Hulst has apparently been encouraging Kojima to reinvent for years. Kojima is making a next-gen action espionage game, a brand new original IP. Preparations are underway, apparently, but production will wait until Death Stranding 2 is out of the way.
He teases that Sony not only does games but music and movies, which might hint at something. But what, we don't know.
Oh! It's going to be a movie at the same time. He wants to transcend the barriers between games and films.
Kami says: That was... wait that was 40-odd minutes long? Why did that feel shorter somehow?
Because 10 minutes of it was Kojima?
A FF7 Rebirth State of Play is coming
There's going to be another special State of Play on 6th February to detail Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, incidentally.
The show closes
So that's it!
I thought the new Silent Hill stealth-drop was exciting. I can't wait to see what that is all about. Death Stranding 2 looked good. Stellar Dawn looks interesting and charmingly double-A. Ken Levine's Judas will obviously be worth a look. But there was a distinct lack of concrete dates for some of these things.
OneAyedPirate says: It;s on the 6th not 26th
Quite right! Clumsy fingers.
perfect_organism says: Taking a celebratory poo after holding it in for 40 mins.
God bless you!
Yeah, it's worth saying that it'll be a long time until we see that new game from Kojima, but I suppose it does lock him into - presumably - some kind of close Sony relationship for forseeable future.
Rogueywon says: "He wants to transcend the barriers between games and films." 1994 called and it's saying something about "Wing Commander 3".
You mean Red Alert, surely?
Kami says: Insert Tim Curry clip here?
Space!
perfect_organism says: Now time for Traitors Australia. Goodnight all xxxxx
G'day! (I know who wins.)
Well, that was that. Thank you everyone for joining us tonight and livening it up a bit. Short and sweet, I guess?
