Freemode Events coming to GTA Online next week
UPDATE: Rockstar says no more updates for 360 and PS3 versions
UPDATE: It appears that the days of updates for all versions of GTA 5 are at an end. Rockstar has told Kotaku that the reason next week's update is PS4, Xbox One and PC only is because the last gen consoles can no longer cope with the things they want to add to the game. "We always knew there might be a point where we would reach the technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle as each downloadable update requires additional memory both for assets and for additional scripting," says Rockstar. "We have continued to optimize the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall."
ORIGINAL STORY: Grand Theft Auto Online's Freemode is getting a shake up in next week's update. A range of ambient events will be added to the roaming multiplayer sandbox, with no lobbies and no waiting. They'll just happen, and you can join in.
Events include more traditional objectives, such as King of the Castle, where you have to hold the high ground against other players, and vehicle-based shoot-out Moving Target. But there are weirder options as well, such as Penned In which traps players inside a shrinking bubble, and anyone who strays outside gets killed. Hunt the Beast, meanwhile, sees one player transformed into a werewolf, at which point they must survive as long as possible while being hunted by other players.
If you'd prefer to stick to your own amusements, there will be an option to choose which - if any - of the Freemode Events will trigger for you.
There are also two new Adversary modes in the update. Hunting Pack has one team trying to deliver a vehicle that explodes if it slows down, while the other team tries to stop them. Cross the Line sets two teams against each other with a neutral zone in between - the winner is the team that infiltrates the other side.
Finally, the update also brings the Rockstar Editor to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. It comes with new features, such as a sound effects library, which will also be added to the PC version at the same time.
The update will be available from 15 September.
