All 5 Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone locations in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
Prepare to take down some tough bosses to get these rare upgrade items.
Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are rare upgrade items in Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. They're exceptionally scarce, and allow you to boost the power of any special weapon up to level +10, making them even more highly sought after than the regular Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones (which are used to upgrade normal weapons).
There's a total of 5 Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones to find in Elden Ring's DLC (on top of the eight you can find in Elden Ring's base game), but most of them will require you to defeat the fearsome dragons that stalk various locations around the Shadow Realm, including Ghostflame Dragons and the Ancient Dragon Senessax. #1: Ghostflame Dragon, Gravesite Plain
To the west of the Abandoned Ailing Village and Site of Grace 'Greatbridge, North' in Gravesite Plain, you'll find a Ghostflame Dragon asleep in the middle of a lake. Defeating this dragon will reward you with a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
#2: Ghostflame Dragon, Scadu Altus
Just when you thought one Ghostflame Dragon was enough, there's another to the south-west of Moorth Ruins in Scadu Altus before you get to the Fort of Reprimand. Like its Gravesite Plain counterpart, defeating this dragon will reward you with another Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
#3: Ghostflame Dragon, Cerulean Coast
You'll find the third and final Ghostflame Dragon down in the Cerulean Coast in the Southern Shore region of the Shadow Realm. It will ambush you from the sky as you ride towards the location of the Southern Shore Map Fragment. Like the others, you'll need to defeat it before you can claim its Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone as a reward.
#4: Ancient Dragon Senessax, Jagged Peak
A true test for any would-be dragon hunter, the Ancient Dragon Senessax is a powerful optional boss you'll find on the way to meet Bayle the Dread in Jagged Peak as part of Igon's questline. This lightning-infused dragon is even more difficult than the Ghostflame Dragons, but you will be rewarded with both a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and a regular Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone for your trouble if you manage to defeat it.
#5: Enir-Ilim
At long last, a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone that doesn't require beating a boss before you can get it. Well, sort of. To access Enir-Ilim, you'll need to defeat Romina, Saint of the Bud in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh and burn the sealing tree on the other side of her boss arena. But once you're inside Enir-Ilim, you'll find this Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone on a corpse at the end of crumbled staircase.
To reach it, you'll need to reach the Site of Grace 'Spiral Rise' and follow the main path up the stairs and out over the rooftops. Once you get back inside the tower and reach the lift at the top, use the lift to descend back down inside the middle of the tower, and follow the path outside. You'll have to fight a Curseblade before you can reach the corpse, but it's just a short distance beyond at the end of the stairway.
