Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super/ RTX 2070 Super: rasterisation analysis
Crysis 3, Far Cry 5, Ghost Recon Wildlands.
Our barrage of tests continues with the inimitable Crysis 3 and a duo of Ubisoft titles - Far Cry 5 and Ghost Recon Wildlands. Our test system remains the same obviously, consisting of a Core i7 8700K running at an all-core turbo speed of 4.7GHz. This is paired with two 8GB sticks of 3400MHz DDR4 supplied by GSkill, with all titles running from solid state storage. To ensure that the power-hungry 8700K doesn't overheat, a Corsair H110i all-in-one liquid cooler is used.
Depending on how you view this page, our performance metrics are presented in one of two ways. If you're reading this on a mobile device, you'll get a table with average frame-rate and lowest one per cent measurements. However, if you're on a desktop or laptop, you get the full-blooded Digital Foundry experience. Play the YouTube videos to see frame-rate and frame-time metrics running in parallel to the video (you can even navigate around the video with the graphs adjusting to match). Beneath that you'll see our barcharts, dynamically generated from the frame-time metrics - mouse over for various stats and press the mouse button to swap over to the more useful percentage differentials.
All performance data is derived from video captures of each graphics card - no internal metrics here, the gold standard in analysis comes from measuring what's actually emerging from the video output of the GPU.
Crysis 3
The climax of the Welcome to the Jungle stage has been a GPU test of ours for years now and continues to tax both CPU and GPU hardware to its limits at higher resolutions on its highest preset. It's also a game that refuses to bow down to newer graphics architectures, with Pascal capable of beating the first wave of Turing cards at the same price-point. All that has changed now, of course. RTX 2060 Super is on par with RTX 2070 at 1080p, only losing a little ground at higher resolutions. RTX 2070 Super doesn't beat the GTX 1080 Ti here (in fact, it's a fair bit slower) but it's still very performant, and broadly matches Radeon 7 performance.
Crysis 3: Very High, SMAA T2X
Far Cry 5
A demanding test for our graphics hardware here, especially so at higher resolutions - and also sees a good showing from both of our AMD contenders. Barely anything divides the RTX 2060 Super from the outgoing RTX 2070 at any resolution, and while the new 2070 Super is a couple of points shy of the GTX 1080 Ti at 1440p and 4K, it's still a very close competitor. Interestingly, the 2070 Super puts up a good fight against Radeon 7, only falling short at ultra HD resolution.
Far Cry 5: Ultra, TAA
Ghost Recon Wildlands
A pleasantly tweakable game at anything up to the high quality preset, Ghost Recon Wildlands becomes a GPU-mangling beast once its ultra settings are locked in. The RTX 2070 Super trails the GTX 1080 Ti by three to four per cent across the board, but puts in a spirited performance against Radeon 7, beating it at everything up to 4K. The RTX 2060 Super moves ahead of GTX 1080 and Vega 64 here, with frame-rates within margin of error when stacked up against RTX 2070.
