Dead Space dev backpedals on Gears of War criticism
EA pulls "worst writing in games" blog post.
Outspoken Dead Space story producer Chuck Beaver has defended his critique of Gears of War, claiming his remarks were taken out of context.
Speaking in an official EA interview, Beaver previously branded Gears of War's story as "atrocious" and "the worst writing in games". Beaver now believes his words were misinterpreted.
"I just wanted to jump in and clarify some of my comments that were taken out of context about Gears of War," Beaver told IGN, in a statement regarding his earlier comments.
"First, let me say that I'm a huge [Gears] fan. It is an epic franchise that has trail-blazed more than a few industry-leading player experiences and mechanics. It is deservedly recognised as a top-tier title. Its success as a property is evidenced by its giant sales and rabid fan base."
The industry is far better for Epic's contributions," Beaver concluded, "and we all owe a great deal of inspiration to their work."
EA has now removed the entire interview with Beaver, where he also admitted Dead Space's story was a "wreck of unrelated events".
"We got lost a bit in complicated lore and plot elements that didn't come through," Beaver previously explained. "And don't even get me started on the final boss sequence that they put in without me in the meeting! That was fun."
