Sonic Team prepping new Sonic for next year
Boom or bust?
Sonic Team is working on an all-new Sonic game for next year. We don't know what platforms it'll be coming to, or whether it'll be sticking to the time-honoured Sonic Cycle. Right now, we just know it's happening, and it's happening in 2017.
The announcement came from Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka, speaking at an event in Tokyo that marked the 25th anniversary of Sega's famous blue mascot (as spotted and translated by Gematsu). Sonic games have had a checkered past, to put it mildly, with Sonic Boom, the last high-profile release, a disaster, while Sonic Lost World - Sonic Team's last console take on the series - not faring too much better. Sonic Generations, the last truly decent high profile entry, came out back in 2011.
Sonic's mid-twenties have seen the hedgehog acquire a certain snark, with his official Twitter account recently throwing glorious shade at the recently released Mighty No. 9. Will next year's release earn Sonic the right to be so darn cocky? At this point, I'm not sure whether to be excited or afraid.
