Rick and Morty co-creator is making a VR game
With one of The Stanley Parable's developers.
Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is planning to make a VR game with William Pugh, one of the two devs behind The Stanley Parable.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Roiland, who voices both Rick and Morty, said of his upcoming VR project "I have never - and I don't say this lightly - been more energised, enthusiastic, excited, and motivated about anything in my entire life... and that includes my TV show stuff."
While development hasn't officially begun yet, Roiland said that he has four "fully fleshed-out games," in his head - and on paper, spanning three notebooks to be precise. He also has an HTV Vive dev kit with sensors mounted throughout his living room that he's fond of making guests, like Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon, try out.
While still in the planning phases, Roiland told PC Gamer that whichever idea he goes with will probably be similar in theme and tone to Rick and Morty. "I'm very sci-fi oriented, I love sci-fi. I'm likely going to be focused in that area - colourful, bright alien worlds with really fun, interesting talented voice acted characters, NPCs and whatnot," the showrunner said.
"I'm definitely focused on really cool experiences with NPC characters that are interesting, that are in my style," Roiland added. "I'm planning to do voices. I'm planning to cast some people - some of my favourite people from Rick and Morty - as characters."
In addition to Pugh, Roiland has also recruited StressLevelZero, a developer working on VR game Hover Junkers, to help out on this project.
Roiland, excited though he may be about VR, is also realistic about his time commitments with his TV work and acknowledges that he'll need a lot of help realising his vision. "We've got a third season pickup and there's other very big obligations that I have in my life," Roiland said. "But this is going to be my passion project, and I will be spending as much as my free time on it as I possibly can."
Previously, Roiland collaborated with Valve on the Rick and Morty Dota 2 announcer pack.
