11 minutes of Tomb Raider footage surfaces
Resembles Uncharted with more throat stabbing.
Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics has released an 11 minute video taking us through a rousing chunk of Lara's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Mechanically, it seems to be standard third-person shooter fare with popping out behind cover, piercing explosive barrels, listening to foes yammer on before getting the drop on them, and QTEs. The comparisons to Uncharted continue when certain scripted sequences prevent Lara from scampering about due to her injuries. And much like Nathan Drake, she pops back into action as soon as enemies rear their ugly heads, nevermind that our heroine's wounds still haven't been treated.
One thing that did stand out from Uncharted was the brutal death animations. While both games fade to monochrome as the life is snuffed from your avatar, Nathan Drake always keeled over in cartoonish, inadvertently comical ragdoll physics. Lara, on the other hand, gets her gullet impaled on a pike. Tim Bisley would be proud. This raises the question of whether her grim demise feels hateful and misogynistic or if it strengthens Lara's character to have her persevere through such unflinching brutality by the skin of her teeth.
We can argue about that further when the full game is released on 5th March on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
