WW1 dogfighting game Red Baron back with MOBA elements
Original creator founds indie studio, launches Kickstarter.
Remember Red Baron, the World War 1 dogfighting game released in 1990? (If not, read Eurogamer's retrospective published in 2010.) Its creator has returned with a Kickstarter pitch for a new entry in the series.
Damon Slye, who while at Dynamix created Red Baron for Sierra Entertainment, recently founded a new indie studio after picking up the long-forgotton rights to the series. That studio, Mad Otter Games, has just launched a Kickstarter for a new Red Baron that asks for $250,000.
The pitch video includes gameplay footage of this new Red Baron, which includes multiplayer. Mad Otter says it wants to take the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre popularised by the likes of League of Legends and Dota 2 "to the skies".
The video provides a brief glimpse at what looks like a three lane map. In multiplayer, your main focus is on clearing the skies of enemy fighters and destroying their base. But we're also promised an offline, DRM-free single-player campaign complete with more than 30 missions set during the 1915-1918 period.
Mad Otter said Red Baron won't include subscriptions, but insisted it will not be pay to win as a result. If funded, the game will be released on November 2014. At the time of publication $5721 had been raised with 29 days left to go.
