The video team take on Dread Pirate Tiberian in new Strange Brigade gameplay
Yo ho ho and a bottle of fun.
Strange Brigade may be the title of Rebellion's upcoming fantasy shooter, but I reckon it would be a rather fitting name for the Eurogamer video team, too.
Think about it - we're a group of misfits, each with a specialist skillset, who come together when the chips are down to overcome all odds.
Well OK, that theory kind of falls apart in that last part, but you get the idea...
Strange Brigade is a third-person, cooperative action game that plays out along the same lines as games like Left 4 Dead and Vermintide. It's not just a constant onslaught of undead enemies here though, there are also some light puzzle-solving elements thrown into the mix to break things up a bit.
Previous preview events for Strange Brigade have focussed on levels with ancient Egyptian themes but in the video above you can watch as Team Eurogamer enter Cut-Throat Cavern to take on the paranormal pirate lord, Tiberian and his army of swashbuckling skeletons.
This level comes from the mid point of the game and instead of featuring dangerous dig-sites and terrifying tombs, the action here takes place in a cavernous cave complex that's littered with old pirate ships and treasure chests. Basically, think of it like the cave from the Goonies and you'll have a good idea of what to expect.
Traps, skeletons and my ability to accidentally team kill in the first 30 seconds weren't the only hazards we faced though. Dread Pirate Tiberian is a recurring boss throughout the level and he provides some particularly tricky shootouts. While most enemies can be dispatched with a couple of volleys from a shotgun, Tiberian was incredibly bullet-spongey and our tussles with him brought to mind the long winded battles with Destiny's raid bosses.
Thankfully there are special weapons crates dotted around each level which you can use to purchase high powered, and often explosive weaponry. Each character also has a special medallion that's imbued with magical powers, allowing them to pull off some signature attacks when things started to get a little overwhelming.
Off camera we also went hands on with the newly announced score attack and horde modes. Both were a lot of fun but really, they brought nothing new to some already well established formulas other than a Strange Brigade skin.
If you want to get your hands on Strange Brigade, it'll be out worldwide on PS4, Xbox One and PC on the 28th of August.
