The Uncharted movie loses its director
Off the rails.
The rollercoaster ride that is Sony's attempt to get an Uncharted movie made has hit a new trough after its director left the project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Levy, who helmed both Night At The Museum films, Date Night and Real Steel, has stepped away from the Uncharted movie to direct Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds. Apparently Sony's after a new director, while Tom Holland remains attached to star as a young Nathan Drake.
Sony Pictures, which owns the film rights to Uncharted, has been trying to get a film version of Naughty Dog's adventure video game off the ground for years. At one point, Mark Wahlberg was set to take on the roll of Nathan Drake, with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci set to star, too.
Last year, things seemed more concrete when Tom Holland was signed up to play a young Nathan Drake in a movie set to be a prequel to Naughty Dog's game series. Then, in August this year, Levy teased the movie was almost ready for filming.
"The closest to the starting line is Uncharted in that it's a massive title," Levy told The Playlist when asked about his upcoming schedule.
"We now have a very good script and we have our star in Tom Holland. That is now subject to schedule and additional casting. But I would say as of right now, that seems to be the most near [the] horizon.
"And it's a movie I'm very excited about."
That was a bit premature, then. Oh well. At least we've still got the Nathan Fillion-starring 15-minute fan film to watch.
Free Guy, by the way, is a sci-fi action comedy that revolves around a background actor who realises he's living in a video game. With the help of an avatar, he tries to stop the makers of the game from shutting down his world.
Really.
