UPDATE 1: Fallout Shelter is out now on the App Store.
It's a free download, but there are in-app purchases. You can spend real world money on lunch boxes, which are like loot chests with random gubbins inside.
Fallout Shelter is a 200 MB download, and requires iOS 7.0 or later. It's compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and is is optimised for iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.
ORIGINAL STORY: Surprise! Bethesda Game Studios chief Todd Howard just announced Fallout Shelter, a new app out on the App Store... tonight!
In Fallout Shelter you get to make your own vault in a game in which you play an Overseer. It's inspired by the likes of Little Computer People, XCOM, SimCity and FTL, Howard said.
Each dweller has full stats and levels up. They have items, weapons and outfits, which they need for when you send them off to the wasteland.
Resources are important, as is having the right balance of food, water and power. There are lots of different rooms you can build, and you can train your dwellers' stats. You get to name all the babies, too.
Fallout Shelter is free, with no paywall timers, and you don't need an internet connection. "We do let you buy more lunch boxes if you want more loot," Howard added.
How about an Android version? Howard didn't mention it on-stage, but Bethesda PR and marketing chief Pete Hines said more information about an Android version will come later.
