Red Dead Redemption 2 Fences explained and where to purchase the Lock Breaker
How to deal in illegal goods with Fences in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Fences are vendors that trade in illegal and stolen goods that the high street usually won't cater for.
Fences all kind of unusual and valuable items, such as new recipes, food, Talismans and the Lock Breaker.
Though you'll be introduced to one as part of the story, there are others across the map - and you can access one as soon as you start Chapter 2.
For more help, our Red Dead Redemption 2 walkthrough explains the requirements for fully completing the game's many story missions.
How to find Fences in Red Dead Redemption 2
You'll be introduced to your first Fence early in the story, specifically during Chapter 2's Pouring Forth Oil, which will lead you to one near Emerald Ranch.
Impatient and what to get there faster? Then take the train - a form of fast travel - to Rhodes. (There is a train station you can take from Valentine, which is near the starting camp.)
When you arrive, the Fence will automatically be added to the map - it's to the north.
Approach it, head to the window, and chat to the dealer to start investigating their wares.
There are plenty more Fences all over the game's world, so be on the look out for them as you're exploring.
Why you should buy the Lock Breaker in Red Dead Redemption 2
Why would you want to visit a Fence as soon as possible? They carry all kinds of valuable items, including Talismans (when you start slaying your first Legendary Animals) through to the Lock Breaker.
The Lock Breaker is a permanent upgrade that, as the name suggests, allows you to break through locks.
Locks are found on the back of stagecoaches. If you steal one, or come across one as part of a random event left on the side of the road.
Its loot will be inaccessible unless you have this item - so the earlier you have the Lock Breaker, the more of these opportunities you can take advantage of.
