Obsidian's mysterious new RPG, Project X - is it Dungeon Siege 4?
That's what it looks like.
Renowned RPG house Obsidian Entertainment has teased a new game: Project X.
The only clues offered are cryptic and few: an Ouroboros logo (dragon eating its tail) encircling the number four, and an enigmatic message. This asked, "What do the words mean? Nothing. The Dirge of Eír Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must."
These were written on the Obsidian Entertainment homepage, the source code for which contained another clue. A hidden message (via VG247) read: "X . X X . X X To tenderness, fellowship. To fellowship, vigilance. So bring we all to the Night Market. I am the Spindle of Esenath. Know me by my light and stand with me in darkness."
The Obsidian Entertainment website has reverted back to normal now, and discussion has been forward to the Project X forum.
Those cryptic messages tease a fantastical setting. And then there's the number four. Is Project X, Dungeon Siege 4?
Obsidian made the underrated Dungeon Siege 3, remember (although the series was created by Gas Powered Games).
Dungeon Siege 4 is a frontrunner among the speculation on the Project X forum.
Dungeon Siege publisher Square Enix has hinted at working with a Western developer on an unannounced game. US bigwig Nobu Tanaka even mentioned a Project X on his LinkedIn profile.
Another possibility is that Project X is an adaptation of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series of fantasy books. Obsidian was linked with a Wheel of Time game back in 2010, but we've not heard anything since.
Obsidian Entertainment's currently making a South Park RPG, and then helping Brian Fargo make Wasteland 2.
