Nintendo's next big Switch innovation is a rubber ring with a Joy-Con stuck in it
More to be revealed next week.
Virtual Boy! The Wii Remote! Some cardboard and a couple of rubber bands! Nintendo's no stranger to leftfield innovation, and its latest grasp for disruptive gaming technology is - wait for it - a wobbly ring thing with a Joy-Con wedged into the top.
Yes, as if Deadly Premonition 2 wasn't enough of a surprise for one week, Nintendo has flabbergasted afresh with the unveiling of - or at least a tease of the unveiling of - well, actually, I have no idea. But it's definitely round, and there's definitely a Joy-Con stuck in it.
According to Nintendo, the curious device is a "new experience" designed for Switch, and its reveal video shows a succession of happy families in pristine clothing wafting one around the living room in a variety of not-entirely-enticing ways.
One woman clutches it while running on the spot, someone squats aggressively while the device trembles in their grasp, another lady clenches it mirthfully between her knees, and a gentleman pumps it vigorously and rhythmically, legs akimbo, while rolling around the floor.
I really don't know what else to say. It looks like some sort of gyroscope-enabled gizmo connected to a kind of Wii Fit/Wii Sports party game hybrid - but with little else to go on, it's probably safest just to wait it out until Nintendo is ready to say more. And a full reveal, judging by the end of today's video, is due next Thursday, 12th September.
