Nintendo hails 3DS, Animal Crossing: New Leaf sales in the US
But fails to reveal Wii U stats.
Nintendo 3DS had a strong month of sales in the US in June.
The handheld sold nearly 225,000 units, making it the best-selling system in the US during the month.
The impressive sales were fuelled by the launch of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Luigi's Mansion 2 in the UK), which collectively increased 3DS hardware sales by more than 40 per cent over the same time last year, and software sales by a whopping 105 per cent over the same time last year.
Things are looking up for 3DS in the US. For the first six months of 2013, Nintendo sold nearly 3.6 million combined physical and digital units of first-party 3DS software - an increase of more than 85 per cent over the same time last year.
Animal Crossing sold more than 505,000 combined physical and digital units in June. More than 20 per cent of these were through the eShop, a figure Nintendo highlights as the second-highest ratio behind only Fire Emblem: Awakening. Nintendo said Animal Crossing looks like being one of the biggest games of the summer.
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D sold more than 108,000 combined units in June - its second month on sale, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon added nearly 115,000 combined units in its fourth month on the market. In the US, Luigi's Mansion has sold more than 750,000 units.
Overall, Nintendo had three of the top five best-selling software SKUs for the month of June in the US.
Unfortunately it was a very different story for the struggling Wii U. In fact, Nintendo failed to disclose sales figures for the console. But with Pikmin 3 nearing launch, it hopes for an improvement in July.
