Gauntlet returns... again
John Romero lays down his big weapon. (Oof.)
Midway is having another crack at reviving the Gauntlet franchise, and, as rumoured late last year, has given John Romero the task of supervising the development on the project.
Having comprehensively tarnished the reputation of its mid-80s Gauntlet legend a few years back with the painfully ordinary hackandslash title Dark Legacy, the struggling US publisher will have to work hard to convince gamers to get excited about this one.
The latest in the series was announced at Midway's annual Games Day on Friday, but revealed no concrete details about the game, its platforms or release date. It won't be too hard to guess that the game will once again be a co-operative hackandslash, although it might be a good idea if Midway updates the old respawing enemy gaming mechanic.
The last attempt was fairly faithful in terms of replicating the game mechanics of the 80s arcade trilogy, but that was part of the problem. Expect E3 to be the platform for the game's official unveiling.
