Mutant Mudds dated for PC later this month
New Grannie stages, PC version trailer.
Retro 2D platformer Mutant Mudds is coming to PC on 30th August, developer Renegade Kid has announced.
It will be on sale its launch week at $7.99 until 5th September, where the price will default to its standard $9.99.
The PC version adds extra CGA-themed bonus stages that are hidden in each of the game's 20 levels and only accessible by Grannie, an unlockable character who holds all protagonist Max's power-ups. Players must gather all of the main game's collectibles to gain access to her, though.
Despite garnering critical acclaim on the 3DS eShop, Mutant Mudds was rejected by Steam back in June. Instead, it will be released on Good Old Games, Gamers Gate, Desura and Renegade Kid's online shop.
Renegade Kid director Jools Watsham told Joystiq, "We will be pursuing Greenlight for sure. We would love to have Mutant Mudds on Steam too so that audience can have a chance to enjoy the game."
He also noted, that GoG and Gamersgate contacted him after hearing about the game's Steam rejection. "Both have been awesome and easy to work with," said Watsham. "I contacted Desura, and they've also been very easy to work with. It is quite a contrast to our experience with console development. I must say that I really like the freedom to launch what we want, when we want, for how much we want."
I was quite fond of Mutant Mudds when it came out earlier this year. I gave it a 7/10 in my review and said its "refined obstacle courses are a distillation of what made us fall in love with 2D platformers in the first place... It never went out to set the world on fire - and it doesn't - but it ascends above its humble concepts with gusto and aplomb."
