Minecraft will no longer allow companies to promote products in-game
But fans can still pay tribute to their outside interests.
Minecraft developer Mojang is cracking down on the sorts of creations people erect in its procedurally-generated sandbox. The gist is that people can still make whatever they want, unless it's specifically to promote an unrelated product. That's now against the user guidelines.
"We want to empower our community to make money from their creativity, but we're not happy when the selling of an unrelated product becomes the purpose of a Minecraft mod or server," said Mojang's director of creative communications, Owen Hill, in a blog post.
As things were, corporations could market products like restaurants, bands, or films by making promotional materials in Minecraft. Even more divisive, politicians could use Minecraft materials in their campaign.
Under the new guidelines this is no longer allowed.
That being said, it's totally okay for fans to pay tribute to their favourite media within Minecraft.
"It's worth mentioning that fans of a particular restaurant, movie, or some other thing are still free to build things in Minecraft that represent or celebrate it so long as the goal or focus is not to promote or sell that stuff," Hill clarified. "The new rules only apply to companies or organisations that are using Minecraft to sell their products or promote their causes."
As such, things like this amazing Beetlejuice roller coaster aren't going anywhere any time soon.
