Fallout 4: Far Harbor - Far From Home
A walkthrough for the opening quest of Fallout 4's Far Harbor expansion, including how to start the DLC, and holotape locations.
If you've downloaded Fallout 4's new DLC, Far Harbor, it will be accessible straight away, providing you've met Nick Valentine in the game's main questline and are sufficiently levelled (level 30 is recommended) to face the challenges posed by Bethesda's biggest DLC to date.
Far Harbor kicks off when a radio signal appears on your Pip-Boy from Valentine's Detective Agency. There's a new case for you and everyone's favourite hard-boiled android to crack, so head to Diamond City and lend him a helping hand. If only you could lend him some cheeks and a bit of neck, too.
Once there, you find out the case is from an old friend of Nick's - a fisherman called Kenji Nakano who lives on the edge of the Commonwealth. Chatting with Nick's receptionist Ellie reveals more, and you can also get a bit of extra information if you pass the required persuasion check. Once you've finished chatting, head back out into Diamond City.
Upon leaving the agency, pull up your map and you'll see Nakano's home is at the Northeast corner of the Commonwealth, just West of Mahkra Fishpacking factory, appropriately. As Valentine says, "all the hardest cases begin with a long walk." This particular wasteland trek will take you right outside the boundaries of the map.
As you approach the house you will hear Nakano shouting, panic-stricken, into a radio. His daughter is missing. In true video game fashion, if you ignore Nakano and head upstairs, you can poke through his family's stuff before you're supposed to, revealing more about his daughter, Kasumi, who appears to be quite the inventor.
Wonderglue, wrenches, screwdrivers and other tools litter the upstairs. At the top of the stairs there's a holotape with a recording of one of Kasumi's projects. Moving into the second bedroom, there's another holotape recording of her latest project: a radio. Check under the bed for another holotape that hints at the bigger picture.
Down in the kitchen another holotape sits on the counter, there's one on a sideboard in the living room, and there's one more tape by the television. You're a real detective now.
If you've brought along Nick Valentine - which you really should - he would have started chatting to Nakano by now. When you're involved in the conversation you can find out more about Nick and Nakano's relationship if you pass the required persuasion check.
Kasumi's father thinks she's been kidnapped by a person she contacted on her makeshift radio, while her mother thinks the 19-year-old left of her own accord due to the actions of her overprotective dad. If you have the required charisma, you get the option to ask for more caps before accepting the job. Don't worry about Nick, as he won't be mad at you for asking. The default fee is 300 caps.
You can optionally get further information from both parents, though some of Rei Nakano's information is only accessible with a charisma check. Now head out the back door near the TV and to the boathouse on the right. On the desk by the computer is a picture frame - examine it to get a boathouse key. The key unlocks a safe towards the back of the boathouse. Guess what's in it? That's right, it's another holotape.
The holotape points you towards a colony of synths in Far Harbor, so talk to Kenji for access to his boat and get ready for the adventure to begin proper. It might be worth grabbing your power armour or a radiation suit to better tackle the island's hostile atmosphere before setting sail.
