Death Stranding and Control lead BAFTA nominations with 11 each
Disco Elysium, Outer Wilds and Goose Game also do well.
The 2020 BAFTA Game Awards nominations were announced this morning, and the big winners are Kojima Productions' Death Stranding and Remedy's Control, with a record-breaking 11 nominations apiece.
Other widely nominated games were Disco Elyisum (7 nominations), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Life is Strange 2 and Outer Wilds (5 nominations), and Knights and Bikes, Untitled Goose Game and Luigi's Mansion 3 (4 nominations).
There are new categories for animation and technical achievement, while the performance award has been split into two categories, for leading and supporting roles.
Control is nominated for Best Game, alongside arty mystery Disco Elysium, cartoon spookfest Luigi's Mansion 3, superb space enigma Outer Wilds, pastoral comedy Untitled Goose Game and From's formidable samurai slasher, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Control's other nominations include narrative, technical and artistic achievement, original property, game design, music, animation, audio and performer nominations for Courtney Hope and Martti Suosalo.
Despite its huge nominations haul, Death Stranding missed out on a Best Game nod - although it does have an eyebrow-raising nomination in the Debut Game category alongside the likes of Manifold Garden and Katana Zero. Of course, it is technically Kojima Productions' first release, but creator Hideo Kojima is such an industry legend that he will be the recipient of this year's BAFTA Fellowship, while his studio is formed around a nucleus of veteran Metal Gear Solid developers from Konami. Death Stranding also has a head-scratching nomination in the Game Beyond Entertainment category, alongside eco-strategy Civilization 6: Gathering Storm and workout game Ring Fit Adventure.
Death Stranding's other nominations are for performers (Norman Reedus, Troy Baker and Lea Seydoux), technical and artistic achievement, original property, music, audio and animation.
The British Game category will be contested by Dirt Rally 2.0, Heaven's Vault, Knights and Bikes, Observation, Planet Zoo and Total War: Three Kingdoms.
