15 years on, infamous Nintendo Easter egg discovered in Pikmin 2
Pellet again, Sam.
Nintendo fans have found a new Easter egg in Pikmin 2, nearly 15 years after the game was first released.
It's another instance of Totaka's Song, the legendary long-running secret snuck into dozens of Nintendo titles.
For the past three decades, Nintendo sound designer Kazumi Totaka has been hiding a simple 19-note ditty in games he's worked on.
Known to fans as Totaka's Song, it's buried within dozens of classics - from Mario Paint to The Legend Zelda: Link's Awakening, Animal Crossing to Mario Kart 8 - but you'll need to search hide to find it.
This latest find in Pikmin 2, posted to YouTube by user QuoteBalrog, requires a typically unlikely set of circumstances in order for the music to trigger.
Specifically, you'll need to enter one of the game's cave dungeons without a GameCube memory card inserted. The game will bring up a screen asking you to save, and it's here you'll need to wait for more than three minutes until Totaka's Song begins to play.
Totaka's Song was already known to exist elsewhere in Pikmin 2 - hidden on a results screen. This instance was found years back - and was subsequently removed by Nintendo for Pikmin 2's Wii re-release. Boo!
More examples are rumoured to lie hidden in other games worked on by Totaka, all still awaiting discovery.
It's now well over three years since Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed to Eurogamer that Pikmin 4 was in development and close to completion. Clearly plans have changed since then - here's hoping we don't have to wait 15 years for that.
