Hurricanes - Typhoons

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), more than 1,000 people are currently in hotel rooms because of Hurricane Laura. FEMA estimates it will be "early summer 2021" before it can get everyone in need into direct housing.

On the heels of the week's first storm system, a nor'easter named Winter Storm Dane will slam the East Coast on Friday night.  

At a shelter in this northern Honduran city, Lilian Gabriela Santos Sarmiento says back-to-back hurricanes that hit with devastating fury this month have overturned her life. Her home in what was once a pretty neighborhood in nearby La Lima was destroyed by flooding.

Hurricane Iota has left a trail of devastation in its wake as it tore across parts of Nicaragua and Honduras.

Iota weakened to a tropical depression and will move off Central America on Wednesday after bringing catastrophic damage to Nicaragua in the exact same area as Eta did two weeks ago. With 30 named storms, we are now the busiest Atlantic hurricane season on record with perhaps a few more areas to watch over the next few weeks.

A powerful Hurricane Iota made landfall on the coast of Nicaragua late Monday, sparking warnings of a life-threatening storm surge and flash flooding in a region recently battered by Hurricane Eta.

Vietnam was bracing for Typhoon Vamco to make landfall in the country’s central coast early on Sunday local time, as the death toll in the Philippines rose to 53 from that country’s deadliest storm this year.

A typhoon killed at least 42 people and caused extensive flooding.
