Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Says Project Scarlett is Making Frame Rate a Priority

The next Xbox wants smooth gameplay.

Resolution is a common point of discussion around each new console generation, and 4K is certainly top of mind when it comes to the next PlayStation and Xbox. But according to Xbox head Phil Spencer, the next step for Microsoft will be addressing frame rate in a big way.

As part of a large profile put together at Gamespot of the Xbox boss, Spencer discussed Project Scarlett, Xbox's next console. It seems like making games look not only gorgeous, but smooth in motion, is a target for the hardware manufacturer.

"Ensuring that the games load incredibly fast, ensuring that the game is running at the highest frame rate possible," Spencer told Gamespot. "We're also the Windows company, so we see the work that goes on [for] PC and the work that developers are doing. People love 60 frames-per-second games, so getting games to run at 4K 60 [FPS] I think will be a real design goal for us."

Spencer goes on to say that 4K is also important, but playability is probably the bigger focus for Microsoft. "How fast do [games] load? Do I feel like I can get into the game as fast as possible and while it's playing? How does it feel? Does this game both look and feel like no other game that I've seen? That's our target," Spencer says.

Xbox is looking to lead this console generation, having officially revealed its next-gen box at E3 2019 in the wake of Sony's absence at the show. It's reportedly set to offer 8K resolution and push 120 frames per second, certainly a far cry from 4K and 60.

It's certainly poised to be a powerful box, though you could question whether the horsepower matters if it doesn't have its "Breath of the Wild" system seller game to push alongside the hardware specs (pressure's on, Halo Infinite). Either way, this next console generation looks to be another huge leap forward, and as console makers start to announce what they've got and why you should buy it, it'll be interesting to see if they live up to the aspirations.
