Riot Games has been steadily expanding the world of League of Legends, and now it has a date set for its RPG adventure through Runeterra. Riot Forge and Airship Syndicate announced today that Ruined King: A League of Legends Story will launch on consoles and PC in early 2021.
Ruined King is part of Riot's new third-party publishing firm Forge, which looks to stretch the world of Runeterra with other studios' help. For this RPG, Airship Syndicate—the studio behind Battle Chasers: Nightwar and Darksiders Genesis—is stepping in. Helmed by comic book artist Joe Madureira, Ruined King will be a single-player RPG starring some familiar faces for players of the popular MOBA.
Set in the port town of Bilgewater and the cursed Shadow Isles, your party will be made up of various champions from League of Legends. Miss Fortune, Illaoi, Braum, Yasuo, Ahri, and Pyke make up the squad that will form your venturing crew; a nice mix of playstyles and themes to round out a role-playing game group. I know you're not necessarily looking to make a balanced team composition for a regular game of League of Legends here, but seeing these characters fight together and interact is part of the draw.
"These are some of our own favorites champions," said Madrureira in a press release. "And we can't wait for players to see how we brought the characters, creatures, and environments of Runeterra to life."
Ruined King is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Soon after, next-gen versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S will follow; and if you pick up a PS4 or Xbox One copy, there will be a free upgrade path to the new consoles.
Riot has been steadily growing beyond just League of Legends, from card games and pop sensations to a completely different universe with the tactical team-based shooter Valorant. With Ruined King, Riot Forge is publishing the first single-player League of Legends game, and making the jump to both consoles and PC. It's a big step, but Runeterra is a big world. With Airship Syndicate at the helm, this could be one to watch for.
Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is due out for consoles and PC sometime in early 2021.
