Brawlers and combo fanatics, take note—Iron Galaxy has announced that it's working on a new, original melee combat multiplayer game for consoles and PC. While details on the project are slim at the moment, word of its existence also comes with some other big Breaking News Updates | Latest News Headlines | Photos & News Videos for the future of the company, with one hire in particular suggesting a new focus on community outreach for this upcoming melee title.
As revealed in a press release from Iron Galaxy today, former Bungie Communications Director David "DeeJ" Dague is joining the company as its new Head of Communications. Dague joined Bungie in the period between the launch of Halo: Reach and the debut of Destiny, and he quickly became one of the most visible and engaged Bungie employees in the Destiny community as the franchise picked up steam. His departure from Bungie was announced just last month.
Along with Dague's hiring, longtime Iron Galaxy COO Chelsea Blasko has been named the studio's new Co-CEO. Adam Boyes, who left his third-party relations VP role at PlayStation in 2016 to join Blasko and founder Dave Lang at Iron Galaxy, will continue to serve as Co-CEO as well. Blasko will focus on hiring, expansion, studio culture, and day-to-day operations while Boyes leads Iron Galaxy's relationships with outside partners.
Earlier this year at DICE, Boyes told USgamer that Iron Galaxy was looking to embark on more original projects that leverage the team's experience with projects like Killer Instinct. "It's really leaning into what are our strengths as a company," Boyes said. "Obviously melee combat is a big strength. Graphics and performance is a big strength. Online multiplayer is a big strength. So a lot of the new concepts and ideas we're working on are sort of utilizing those strengths and those areas."
Iron Galaxy is also well-known for its porting work, particularly the titles it's helped bring to the Nintendo Switch. Skyrim, Diablo 3, and Overwatch all received specially tailored ports (including exclusive features like gyro aiming and local Diablo multiplayer) for Nintendo's hybrid console.
The team has also grown over the past year despite the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic. Now employing over 175 people, Iron Galaxy is the largest it's ever been since Lang founded the company in 2008.
While continued growth and one or more original projects might be on the horizon, it seems Iron Galaxy still privileges stability above all else.
"[W]e're not trying to convert and become Bungie," said Boyes at DICE. "That's not the masterplan. The work for hire stuff that's sort of built our company for the last 11 and a half years has created stability. We've never had layoffs as a company. We don't crunch[...] That stability cornerstone is such an important part of who we are, and that's because of the work for hire stuff."
