If you only know Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, from the Marvel movies as "the Avenger with arrows, no super powers, and a very normal family," then you might not be too excited to hear that Crystal Dynamics is going to add him to Marvel's Avengers after launch. The good Breaking News Updates | Latest News Headlines | Photos & News Videos is that the developers are pulling ideas from one of the best Hawkeye runs of all time.
Crystal Dynamics unveiled its version of Hawkeye on today's "War Table" stream, following an extensive look at what awaits players in the Marvel's Avengers beta next month. A short teaser trailer shows Hawkeye looking as handy with a bow as ever. He's also sporting a fairly nondescript, boring costume, but that's basically par for the course with Barton.
After the teaser on the War Table stream, Crystal Dynamics pointed to the critically acclaimed Matt Fraction and David Aja run of the Hawkeye comics, specifically the initial "My Life as a Weapon" arc, as a major inspiration for the studio's new take on Barton. As revealed over at the Official PlayStation Blog, that extends to Hawkeye's look too: one of his alternate costumes will have him sporting blonde hair, purple t-shirt, and jeans pulled almost one-to-one from Aja's design.
When Hawkeye is added to Marvel's Avengers, he'll also bring his own set of story missions. Unlike the individual hero-focused single-player missions shipping with the main Avengers campaign at launch, Hawkeye's will also be playable in co-op.
As for when players can expect to see Barton catch up with Kamala Khan's reunited Avengers team, it's too early to say. Hawkeye is the first confirmed post-launch hero for Marvel's Avengers, but on the War Table stream, his emblem was actually the second in a lineup of four, with the other three left as question marks.
While Hawkeye might be a long while off, the release of Marvel's Avengers is not. The beta period will kick off on August 7 for PS4 players with pre-orders and then expand throughout the month. Not long after that, Marvel's Avengers will launch for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia on September 4.
Later, after the launches of the Xbox Series X and PS5, console players will be able to upgrade to their corresponding next-gen version for free.
