Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah Are Leaving BioWare

The two are departing from the studio and letting the next generation step up.

Two members of BioWare's leadership, Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah, are leaving. Electronic Arts announced today that both will be departing the company, though development on BioWare's current projects will continue as planned despite the shift.

A statement from EA Chief Studios Officer Laura Miele confirms that Samantha Ryan will continue overseeing the studio, while Christian Dailey—who joined BioWare from Blizzard—will be leading development on the next Dragon Age. Development will continue on that Dragon Age, as well as Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, Anthem Next, and the new Mass Effect led by Mike Gamble.

In statements from both Hudson and Darrah, the pair say they're retiring from the studio. The latter assures that he is confident the Dragon Age franchise will carry on strong.

"This has been a very difficult decision for me," Darrah says. "The team of amazing developers on Dragon Age, make my life fuller and better. They have taught me so much. But the strength of the team is also what makes this possible. I know that Dragon Age won’t just survive without me, it will thrive."

"It’s not an easy decision to make, and big changes like this always come with a certain degree of sadness," Hudson writes in his statement. "I will miss being able to work every day with our inspiring developers on the biggest and most exciting projects I can imagine. But I also know that this is a good time for a change, for both myself and BioWare."

Hudson says he's unsure what he'll be doing next, though he wants to start by rediscovering his creative passion through "more personal work." Darrah also does not comment on what's next for him. Miele confirms that EA is currently undergoing a search for a new GM for the studio.

Both Hudson and Darrah have a lengthy legacy with BioWare. Hudson worked on BioWare projects ranging from MDK 2 and Baldur's Gate 2 to the Mass Effect trilogy, and after leaving the studio in 2014, returned to take up the role of general manager in 2017. Darrah is a veteran of the Dragon Age franchise, as one of its leads since the series' inception.

With multiple BioWare projects currently undergoing development, including new entries in both the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, it's a pretty significant shift in the leadership at the top. Hudson says in his statement that he knows BioWare will move forward with "a strong and complete set of studio leaders."
