Leave it to Among Us to do two surprise launches in one week. Having just hit Nintendo Switch on Tuesday, this indie phenomenon is also joining the library for Xbox Game Pass on PC. Today also brings another piece of emergency meeting-worthy Breaking News Updates | Latest News Headlines | Photos & News Videos: Among Us will get an Xbox port next year that'll also hit Game Pass when it launches.
Xbox Wire announced last week that Among Us would hit Game Pass for PC "soon," which today turned into "right now." Then, right after revealing its addition to the PC library on Twitter, Xbox followed things up with confirmation of Among Us being ported to Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X in 2021, launching simultaneously on Game Pass there too.
Among Us is also slated to get more content quite soon, starting with an Airship map early next year. The core gameplay—crewmates completing tasks, impostors murdering crewmates, crewmates trying to suss out who's "sus"—will remain the same, but the Airship promises tricky new minigames and interesting spins on getting around the map.
These launches and updates will help ensure that Among Us stays big, but it's hardly like it needed to be on Switch and Xbox to make a mark. Just as a mobile and PC-only title, Among Us has had a meteoric success story this year. On top of dominating Twitch, it took home two trophies at The Game Awards and served as the catalyst for a massive "get out the vote" stream featuring Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in late October.
Among Us is so popular that Fortnite is not-so-subtly copying it for its own identity-hiding betrayal mode now. I guess that's another good reason for developers Innersloth to keep updating Among Us instead of making a sequel while bringing it to new platforms; other companies can try to steal their thunder, but it's hard to compete with the original when it already has a low, low price tag and the momentum of memes and name recognition behind it. Also, Epic and others should already know what happens when enough folks think you're the impostor.
